Definition

Transcriptional regulation is the fundamental biological process controlling the rate and extent of gene expression by modulating the synthesis of RNA from a DNA template. As a central concept and research field in molecular biology, it investigates the complex molecular mechanisms, including the interactions of regulatory proteins, DNA sequences, and chromatin structure, that govern which genes are active in a cell at any given time, thereby determining cellular identity, function, and response to environmental stimuli.
